Hey Guys,
Today I
want to talk about something I have recently became very aware of & that is
the harmful chemicals & toxins used in beauty products.
Researchers in the U.S.
have found that 1 in 8 of 82,000 ingredients used in personal
care products are hazardous industrial chemicals. Many of these harmful
substances are used to clean industrial equipment, stabilize pesticides
and grease gears.I think we can all agree that these are not things we want in
our moisturisers or shampoos.
Some products also contain
carcinogens which have been linked to causing cancer, neurotoxins which can
cause damage to the brain and nervous system and reproductive
toxins which impair the ability to reproduce and can cause damage to the
offspring itself.
Thankfully things like Formaldehyde (carcinogen
and irritant found in nail products, hair dye, fake eyelash adhesives &
shampoos.) and hydroquinone (used for lightening skin. rated most toxic on
the EWG’s Skin Deep database, and linked to cancer and reproductive toxicity)
are banned in the EU & UK.
However
words such as “natural” &"organic" have no legal definition.
Companies are supposed to only use an organic label if all ingredients are
certified-organic, but they can also say it’s “made with organic” if it a
product contains a minimum of 70 percent certified-organic ingredients. 30% is
still too much room for dangerous toxins.
How can I protect myself from these harmful chemicals & toxins?
When
doing my research I found a really helpful website Safecosmetics.org
On there they have letters written to make-up brands asking them to remove harmful
substances from their products. They also have a lot of information about
safer beauty products.
There
is also a free app that you can download called 'Think Dirty' which lets you
scan a barcode of a product & will tell you if there is any harmful toxins
in it, so you can make wiser shopping decisions. They will also rate how
harmful some products are on a scale out of 10b& tell you how safe the products lying in your
bathroom are
.I have been using this app for the past 2 weeks and have found it both very helpful & scary.
Finally I found this video which explains everything I couldn't on this topic.
We
should demand that all of our products be safe to use & we should get
informed and warn others about this matter.
Let me know what you think about this in the comments below.
Have a good evening!
Have a good evening!
Love always,
Nixie xx
